About Lalo’s: A Legacy of Flavor and Tradition
In 1953, Edward “Lalo” Gonzales began his journey of providing high-quality, ethically sourced spices to customers across Arizona. What started as a small family business under the name Chili King soon became a cornerstone for authentic Mexican flavors in Phoenix and southern Arizona.
For over 70 years, Lalo led his business with an unwavering commitment to quality and customer service. He built lasting relationships with more than 250 small businesses and grocers, offering a diverse range of Mexican spices and products that celebrated the richness of authentic cuisine. Among his iconic offerings were rare Chile tepins, Chile de Árbol, Guajillo, Pasilla pods, and traditional blends like Menudo Mix and Chorizo Mix—favorites for enhancing stews, salsas, and chilis.
In 1977, Lalo rebranded his company as Jim’s Spices, maintaining his dedication to quality despite the challenges of competing with larger corporate spice companies. Through decades of change, Lalo never compromised his mission of delivering exceptional products with a personal touch.
In 2024, after 71 years of dedication, Lalo passed the reins of his beloved business to his daughter. In honor of his enduring legacy, she rebranded the company as Lalo’s. Now under the leadership of an innovative and passionate Latina entrepreneur, Lalo’s continues to support loyal customers while introducing new audiences to the vibrant, authentic flavors of Mexican cuisine.
At Lalo’s, we are committed to delivering exceptional customer service, earning loyalty through quality, reliability, and a shared passion for culinary excellence. Whether you are recreating cherished traditional recipes or exploring innovative cooking techniques, Lalo’s is here to bring the soul of Mexican flavor to your kitchen.
Today, Lalos is proudly run by his Daughter Sonya and her children, who continue to carry his love for flavor, family and community. The family is also active in the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, supporting local businesses and cultural traditions across the state.
Lalo's son-in-law, a 27 year U.S. military Veteran, embodies the same dedication, integrity, and perseverance that Lalo built his business on. In Honor of him and who serve, Lalo's proudly supports veterans and their families.
At Lalo's, every spice carries a story - one of family, heritage, and the belief that everyone eats at Lalos table.
